Prior to Christmas, I was honoured to be invited to attend Total Recreation’s latest exhibition, Totally Talented.  A friend of ours, Mark was exhibiting his latest works.

This was an art and craft exhibition by artists with disabilities and featured many of their works from throughout 2007.

The exhibition was held for one night only at the Mirambeena Resort and the turnout for the event was great.  I have been to a number of these exhibitions over the years and this year was the best by far.

The room was well set up and was truly festive.  Unfortunately, none of the works were for sale, despite the artists being able to sell each piece thrice over.  The quality of the work was superb and the art program provided through Total Recreation has provided an opportunity for people with disabilities to participate in a recreational activity that they are extremely talented in.

There was colourful door curtains, hanging whirly mobiles, paper maiche lamps and punched tin pictures.  Of course, there was a Christmas tree with the most beautiful Christmas decorations I have seen in a long time and each of them, lovingly made by hand.

There is of course a band of volunteers, Jennifer Cook, Suzanne Cavanagh, Lyn Ryan and Sheina Atkinson who assist each of the artists.  St John’s College provides a venue for the art workshops and Andrew Barcroft from the Good Guys provides some financial assistance to Total Recreation.  Andrew was on hand to officially open the exhibition and present certificates to each of the artists and volunteers.

The bit that brought a tear to my eyes was the total joy and pride in each of the artists for all thew work they had achieved in a year.  Their excitement had the room buzzing.
