The Cost of Lettuce

One of things you get used to when living in Darwin is the cost of fruit and vegetables and the lack of quality produce.

Last night we had our house guests for dinner and my husband asked me to purchase a lettuce on my way home.  I stopped at the corner store and picked up an absolutely gorgeous looking lettuce.  Is there any such thing?  I went to the check-out and the price of the lettuce came up.  Anyone want to take a guess?

$5.20!

That is the most I have ever paid for a lettuce.  If we didn’t have people coming to dinner I would have left the lettuce at the shop.

Anyway the lettuce was quality piece of produce.  I know there is a water shortage in Australia and lettuces are mostly made of water – I wonder if there is any correlation between the two?
